Small Steps, Big Wins

Whether you're just starting your journey with an autism diagnosis or you've been navigating this path for a while, we at the Autism Center of Illinois are here to support you every step of the way.

Today, I want to talk about something that’s on every parent’s mind: progress. We all want to see our children grow, learn, and thrive, but sometimes the journey can feel overwhelming. The good news? Small steps lead to big wins!

Autism acceptance

Celebrate the Little Victories

One of the most important things I tell parents is that progress comes in all shapes and sizes. Maybe your child made eye contact today, tried a new food, or used a new word. These moments are huge! Every milestone—big or small—is a building block toward success.

Keeping routines with autistic children

Create a Routine That Works for Your Family

Children with autism often thrive with structure. A consistent schedule can help reduce anxiety and improve focus. But let’s be real—life happens! The key is to find a balance between structure and flexibility. If things don’t go as planned, it’s okay. Adapt, breathe, and try again tomorrow.

The Power of Positive Reinforcement

We all respond well to encouragement, and kids with autism are no different! When your child accomplishes something—whether it’s following a direction, staying calm in a tough moment, or trying something new—celebrate it! Claps, high-fives, stickers, or even a few extra minutes of their favorite activity can go a long way in reinforcing positive behaviors.
